Are Glass Ornaments Good For Homes With Kids And Pets?

Posted on September 5, 2022July 29, 2023 by Nora-Christmas

Adding a Festive Touch to Your Home

What is one of the biggest issues that homes with kids and pets have each year when Christmas rolls around? The tree and all the decor that is placed around the home. Granted, those who have older kids do not have as much of an issue. However, with younger kids and pets involved, it can become a headache. So much so that many households with kids and pets have invented some rather unique ways to ensure that their tree and decor is safe during the holidays. This brings us to the question: are glass ornaments safe to have on your tree if you have kids and pets in your home?

Glass ornaments are highly breakable. And if they were to fall to the floor, they will shatter. You will find that this shatter can leave tiny bits of the ornament laying around, which can easily go into a foot or paw. For this reason, many homeowners who have both kids and pets or just pets often rethink using a lot of glass ornaments on their trees. However, if you love the beauty of these ornaments, then there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your kids and pets are safe, but so are your glass ornaments.

Tips for Using Glass Ornaments in Homes with Kids and Pets

Here are some tips for using for your kids and pets to ensure they stay safe but your glass ornaments are not going to get broken:

1. Have a path around the tree that is a no-go for pets and kids. You will find that many parents put kids’ gates around their trees to keep both little hands and paws from trying to pull of ornaments. This can be a great idea if you have the room to do this.

2. Put your tree with the glass ornaments into a room that the kids and pets are not allowed into.

3. Be sure that you hang your glass ornaments further back on the branch so they are more secure. This way, if your kids or pets do knock on the tree, hopefully, it will not result in all of these ornaments falling and shattering on the floor.

4. Have a talk with kids about not touching anything on the tree, and be sure that you are training your pets to stay away from the tree as well. Sometimes, all it takes is a firm no for both kids and pets to leave the tree and your ornaments alone.

While you can do everything in your power to ensure that your ornaments are safe, sometimes accidents do happen. When this happens, be sure that you thoroughly vacuum the area that the ornament fell, so no one is getting any type of glass in their foot. Remember, an ornament can be replaced if it is broken, so there is no need to get upset if it does become broken. These things happen.

Glass ornaments are definitely beautiful but if you worry about kids and pets, you may need to start thinking of some inventive ways to keep everything safe!
